How To Trim Your Bulldog's Nails
When you have a pet, grooming is essential to their health and well-being. Part of the grooming process is dealing with your bulldog's nails. Here are some tips on making this as painless as possible for your and your dog.
Get a grip
How you clip your bulldog's nails will depend on you, as each dog and owner is different. The most important thing you need to remember is that your bulldog must be comfortable, but controlled. You can cause your dog harm if he moves his paw while you are cutting a nail. You can either place your dog on a table, sit on the floor with them, or hold the dog in between your legs. When trimming a nail, keep a firm but not painful grip on your dog's paw. You may need a second person to help you if you dog is large.
Work with your dog, not against them
Keep in mind that your bulldog may be a little uneasy getting his/her nails trimmed. Try to make them as comfortable as possible. Never back them into a corner or pin them down to trim their nails if they seem overly agitated. Keep your voice low and even, and always offer praise and attention. If your dog stays well behaved for just one nail then continue the praise and offer them a treat to return. Calm them again and trim another nail. Repeat this until all of his nails are trimmed. If you don't cause the dog any pain, they should quickly realise that the rewards are worth sitting still during nail trimming.
Use the right tool
It is important for your bulldog and for you that their nails are kept short. Long nails can cause damage to furniture, flooring and people when you dog gets excited or is playing. Trim your dog's nails by using dog nail clippers or an electric grinder. Both of these can be found at your local pet store, and most will come with instructions for use. You can also now find handy videos online.
How short?
Your dog's nails should touch the ground when they walk. If you hear your dog's nails tapping on a hard floor as they walk then they are too long. Extra long dew claws (the nail on the inside of their front legs just above your dog's ankle) can curl up and cut into their legs. When trimming the nails you want to stop just before you reach the pink tissue or 'quick'. If your bulldog has white nails, you can see where the quick begins. For dark nails, trim a little at a time until the nail is the right legnth. If you do nip the quick, don't panic. Press a tissue tight against the nail and the bleeding will stop naturally in a few minutes, or you can use stop pads to quickly stop the bleeding. Use a nail file to smooth any rough edges that might snag.
Another easy way to keep your bulldog's nails short is to take him on plenty of walks along paved surfaces.
