Bulldogs are a great companion breed; full of character and a perpetual puppy attitude that instantly endears them to almost everyone they meet.  If you are here, you probably already know how wonderful bulldogs can be.  What you may not be aware of are some very serious potential health problems that plague some bulldogs.  Understanding the risks when you get a bulldog can help you be prepared and prevent heartache down the road.

Elongated Soft Palate

Officially known as Brachycephalic syndrome, elongated soft palates in bulldogs can lead to breathing trouble because part of the palate extends into the air passages, making the passage smaller.  Breathing troubles such as exercise intolerance, excessive snoring and difficulty cooling off can all be caused by elongated soft palates.

Allergies

Bulldogs can be more susceptible to allergies, which can cause misery during allergy season.  There are medications to treat allergies in dogs, however, so be watchful of signs such as itching, hives, and occasionally sneezing or watery eyes.

Hip Dysplasia

Though more common in larger breeds, bulldogs can suffer from hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip tries to separate from the pelvic bone.  This can cause severe pain and difficulty walking.  It can be treated with medicines, diet and surgery if necessary.

Other Health Problems

In addition to those common issues, less common problems that plague bulldogs include dermatitis, mange, eye lid anomalies and heart problems. 

All animals have the potential for health problems, so consider all the risks and benefits of bringing home a bulldog, not just the eventual chance they may develop a health problem such as those listed above.
